Technicians carrying photovoltaic solar module while installing solar panel system on roof of house

What to Expect During a JEL Renewables Solar Installation.

Switching to solar is a big decision, and we understand that the installation process can feel unfamiliar if you have never gone through it before. From your first enquiry with us through to the moment your system is switched on, our aim is to keep everything clear, straightforward and as stress‑free as possible. We use our experience from working on homes and businesses across the UK to plan each stage properly, so there are no surprises and you always know what is happening next.

Our role is to handle the technical work, permissions and paperwork in the background, while keeping you fully informed. We design systems around how you use electricity, not just the space available on your roof, and we take the time to explain your options in plain English. Our installers work to recognised UK standards, use high‑quality equipment and are trained to be tidy, respectful and safety‑conscious in and around your property.

In this guide, we walk you through what to expect during a typical JEL Renewables solar installation: from the first quote and survey, through to installation day, handover and aftercare. The aim is to give you an honest, practical picture of the whole journey, so you feel confident about each step.

Initial enquiry and quotation

Everything starts with an enquiry – usually through our website, a phone call or a message on social media. At this stage, we will ask for some basic details: your address, a recent electricity bill and a short description of your usual energy use. This gives us enough information to understand your current consumption and start thinking about a system that fits your needs, rather than simply filling the roof with panels.

We then complete an initial desktop assessment of your property using mapping tools and aerial imagery. This lets us look at roof direction, size, shading from trees or nearby buildings, and access for scaffolding. From there, we can prepare an outline design and indicative quote, including the proposed number of panels, the type of inverter, any battery storage option, and estimates for energy generation and potential savings.

Once you have had time to read through the quote, we are happy to talk it through line by line. We explain how the system works, how it connects to your existing electrics, and what impact it is likely to have on your bills over a typical year. If you would like us to adjust the design – for example, to add a battery, increase capacity or work around specific parts of the roof – we will refine the proposal and send you an updated version before anything is agreed.

Technical survey and final design

After you are happy with the outline proposal, we arrange a technical and structural survey at your property. One of our experienced engineers will visit to take accurate measurements of the roof, check the structure and condition, and assess your existing electrical setup. This is where we confirm that everything planned at the quotation stage can be installed safely, neatly and in line with UK regulations.

During the visit, we will confirm the final panel layout, check the type and condition of your tiles or slates, and agree locations for the inverter and any batteries. We will also inspect your consumer unit, main fuse and meter position to see whether any upgrades or minor works are needed. This is a good moment for you to ask practical questions about cable routes, equipment positions and what to expect on the installation day.

Once the survey is complete, we finalise the system design. You then receive a detailed proposal showing exactly what will be installed, where it will go and how it will perform. When you are comfortable with every part of the plan and give us the go‑ahead, we move on to permissions and scheduling.

Permissions, paperwork and booking your install

Before we arrive with any equipment, we manage the necessary technical paperwork. For most domestic systems, this means notifying or applying to your local Distribution Network Operator so your system can be safely connected to the grid. For larger or more complex systems, approvals can take a little longer, and we will keep you updated so you know how things are progressing.

We then confirm installation dates with you and arrange scaffolding through our trusted partners. You will know exactly which days our team will be on site and roughly how long the work will take. Most typical home installations, including scaffolding, can be completed within one to two days, while larger or commercial projects may need more time. We also advise you of any simple preparation that helps things run smoothly, such as keeping access clear to your driveway, loft or consumer unit.

Our goal at this stage is to give you a clear timetable and set expectations, so the installation itself feels planned and organised rather than disruptive.

Installation day: how we work on site

On installation day, our team will arrive at the agreed time, introduce themselves and run through the plan with you. We confirm the final panel layout, inverter and battery locations, and check there are no last‑minute changes needed. Before any work begins, we complete safety checks on the scaffolding and, where necessary, isolate the power to work safely on your electrical system.

The installation usually follows a well‑practised sequence. Our roof specialists install the mounting system first, fixing brackets into the rafters and then fitting rails that the panels will sit on. Tiles or slates are carefully lifted and refitted around these fixings, with the correct flashings and seals used to keep the roof weatherproof. Only once the mounting is fully secure and watertight do we start fitting the panels themselves.

In parallel, our electrician looks after the internal work. This includes mounting the inverter, connecting any batteries, running DC cables from the roof and wiring the system into your consumer unit with the appropriate isolators and protection devices. We pay close attention to neatness and clear labelling, because it matters both for safety and for future maintenance. You can expect a level of noise from drilling and roof work, but we aim to keep disruption inside your home to a minimum and protect floors and surfaces where we are working.

When the physical installation is complete, we move on to testing and commissioning. We check all connections, confirm that the system is performing as expected and ensure the inverter responds correctly to changes in supply. We then set up your monitoring app or portal, so you can see your generation data in real time. Only once all tests are passed and everything is operating correctly do we leave the system live.

Handover, documents and ongoing support

At the end of the installation, we carry out a full handover. We show you the main parts of your system, explain the inverter display and walk you through your monitoring app. We will talk about how generation changes through the seasons, what normal operation looks like and what to do if you ever see an error message. The aim is for you to feel confident using and understanding your system from day one.

We also provide a handover pack containing system details, electrical certificates, warranties and key product information. This documentation is useful for your own records, helpful if you ever sell your property, and often needed if you apply for an export tariff with your energy supplier. If you need support with those next steps, we can guide you on what information is typically required.

Our support continues long after the scaffolding has come down. Solar systems are generally low‑maintenance, but we are here if you notice anything unusual in your monitoring, want advice on performance, or your energy use changes – for example, if you add an electric vehicle or consider expanding your system. Our experience across different property types means we can give you practical, honest advice throughout the life of your system, not just on installation day.
