The Story Behind JEL Renewables: Why We Started and Where We’re Going.

When people come to us asking about solar, batteries or EV chargers, they are not just buying a product – they are trusting a team. That is why the story behind what we do matters. Our journey did not begin with a marketing plan or a trend; it started with an electrician, a small electrical business and a long‑term belief that we could do things differently in the energy world. Over time, that belief grew into a dedicated renewable energy company serving homes and businesses across the UK.

The JEL name has roots going back more than 30 years, when Colin founded JEL Electrical and built a reputation for practical, dependable electrical work. As the energy market shifted and the climate crisis moved from a distant concern to something felt in everyday life, the question changed from “Can we do the job safely and well?” to “How can we help people use cleaner energy in a way that actually works for them?” A passion for a renewable future gradually turned from an idea into a clear direction, and JEL Renewables was born in 2019 as a separate company focused on solar PV, battery storage and EV charging.

Today, we see ourselves as part of a much bigger movement: helping families, businesses and communities take control of their energy use, cut costs and reduce carbon emissions. We are honest about what we can deliver, we care about the experience people have when they work with us, and we are determined to keep improving. This is our story so far – why we started, what drives us and where we are heading next.

How it started: from electrical roots to renewables

Our story begins with JEL Electrical, a business built on hands‑on electrical installation work and long‑standing customer relationships. For decades, our focus was on getting the fundamentals right: safe installations, tidy work and clear communication on jobs of all sizes. That grounding in traditional electrical work is still part of who we are; it means we understand buildings from the inside out and know what it takes to integrate new technology into real homes and commercial sites.

As the conversation around climate change grew, and technologies like solar PV became more reliable and accessible, we found ourselves increasingly drawn to projects that cut carbon and helped customers reduce their bills at the same time. Installing a solar array or an EV charger felt different from conventional electrical work – it gave people something they could see and measure every day, in both cost savings and emissions. Over time, more of our work shifted in that direction, until it became clear that we needed a dedicated arm focused on renewables.

In June 2019, JEL Renewables Ltd was formally incorporated as a separate company, with its registered office in Southport and a clear focus on solar and related technologies. That decision allowed us to build a specialist team, invest in training and certifications, and position ourselves as a solar and EV charging installer rather than a general electrical contractor who “also does solar”. The goal was simple: bring the reliability and workmanship of our electrical background into a new chapter centred on clean energy.

Our mission: helping people take control of their energy

From the outset, our mission has been to help people achieve a greener future while saving money and protecting themselves from rising energy costs. We know that energy is one of the biggest and most unpredictable household and business expenses, and that many people feel they have very little control over it. Our role is to change that by designing and installing systems that let you generate, store and use more of your own power.

On our public profiles we describe this in straightforward terms: we are a fully qualified and certified Solar PV and EV charging station installer, aiming to provide a professional, reliable service and some of the most competitive quotes on the market. Behind that, there are a few core principles that guide us day to day:

  • We want to help our clients lower CO₂ emissions by using green energy in their homes, on their sites and on the roads.
  • We aim to save our clients money and protect them from price hikes by making better use of solar generation and smart technologies.
  • We believe in offering comprehensive support from first enquiry through to aftercare, so the whole journey – not just the install day – feels clear and well‑managed.

For us, that mission is not a slogan; it is how we decide which technologies to work with, which partners to trust and where to invest our time. We choose solutions that we would be comfortable installing on our own homes or businesses, and we pay attention to the real‑world experience of using them, not just the specification sheet.

What matters to us: values in practice

Anyone can list values, but we believe they only mean something if customers can see them in the way we behave. When people describe working with us in public reviews, they often mention friendly, informed communication, smooth project management and systems that perform as promised. Those are the kinds of comments that matter to us because they line up with how we want to operate.

A few of the things we hold important are:

  • Quality and professionalism – We are fully qualified in solar and EV charging, and we work to recognised UK standards and certifications. That means installations that are safe, compliant and built for the long term.
  • Honest advice – We would rather design a system that genuinely suits your roof, your usage and your budget than oversell capacity that you will never fully use. That approach is reflected in the way we talk openly about payback, tariffs and realistic expectations across both domestic and commercial projects.
  • Customer‑first service – From the first enquiry, we aim to give clear explanations, realistic timelines and a single point of contact wherever possible. Independent feedback highlights that personal, responsive approach as one of the reasons people recommend us.
  • Sustainability in action – By focusing on solar PV, battery storage and EV charging, we are committing our skills and effort to technologies that directly reduce emissions and support a cleaner grid.

These values guide how we recruit, how we train our teams and how we plan each project. They are also the reason we take our online reputation seriously: we see every review as a reflection of whether we are living up to the standards we set ourselves.

Key milestones on our journey so far

Like any growing business, we can point to a few milestones that mark our progress. The first obvious one is our formal incorporation as JEL Renewables Ltd in 2019, which underlined our shift from general electrical work into dedicated renewables. From there, several steps have helped shape who we are today:

  • Building out our solar PV offering for both domestic and commercial clients, with larger commercial rooftops sitting alongside family homes in our portfolio.
  • Adding battery storage as part of our core service, so we can help customers store surplus solar and make the most of time‑of‑use and export tariffs.
  • Becoming a fully qualified EV charging installer, allowing us to support the transition to electric vehicles with home and workplace charge points.
  • Expanding our reach from our base in the North West to projects across the wider UK, while keeping a strong local presence and responsive support.
  • Developing a reputation, reflected in public review platforms, as a solar specialist with high customer satisfaction and a focus on both technical quality and communication.

Along the way, we have seen the renewable energy sector move from a niche to a mainstream choice, with government campaigns, charities and independent organisations all encouraging homes and businesses to consider solar and low‑carbon technologies. Being part of that shift, project by project, has been a major driver for us.

Where we’re going: our vision for the future

Looking ahead, our focus is on deepening rather than diluting what we do. We want to remain a specialist in solar PV, battery storage and EV charging, while continually improving how we design, install and support those systems. For businesses, that means helping more organisations reduce overheads, strengthen their sustainability credentials and future‑proof their operations with commercial solar solutions. For homeowners, it means making the move to renewables as straightforward and rewarding as possible.

We see a few key priorities for the coming years:

  • Smarter, integrated systems – Combining solar, batteries and EV charging so that properties can manage their energy intelligently, taking advantage of tariffs and automation rather than manual effort.
  • Data‑driven performance – Using monitoring and real‑world data to refine designs, spot issues early and continually improve how our installations perform over time.
  • Supporting the wider transition – Working with businesses and households that want to lead on sustainability, helping them cut carbon while still focusing on reliability and value.
  • Maintaining a human touch – Even as technology gets smarter, we believe people still value being able to speak to a real team that knows their project and can offer straightforward advice.

Ultimately, our ambition is simple: to keep playing a meaningful role in the UK’s shift towards cleaner, more independent energy, one installation at a time. We are proud of where we have come from – an electrical business built on craft and reliability – and we are committed to where we are going: a future where solar, storage and electric vehicles are a normal part of everyday life.
